Downspouts

downspout draining too close to the houseKeeping your downspouts in good repair and properly placed can mean a lot for the health of your home’s foundation. By having downspouts and gutters properly installed in your home you can be sure that water isn’t pooling around your foundation. If water pools around your foundation, it causes pressure on foundation walls and water will find its way into your basement. Cracks will begin to form and water seepage can occur. Oversaturated soil can put a tremendous amount of pressure on the foundation walls. (This is called hydrostatic pressure.) This pressure can cause walls to lean, bow, or even collapse.

Downspout Placement is Important

Most experts agree that downspouts should empty five to ten feet away from the foundation walls. This gives the soil plenty of room to absorb the runoff. Gutters should run freely, allowing the rainwater to flow to the downspout. If gutters are spilling over, that water will run down the foundation walls, causing the soil to become oversaturated.

Making sure your home’s gutters and downspouts are working correctly is an inexpensive and easy way to prevent foundation damage. The cost of foundation repair is exponentially more expensive than making sure your downspout is connected to the gutter system.
